Why Saying the Wrong Thing Can Be the Best Thing You Do

Everybody knows by now I live in a bilingual house. My wife is Mexican. I'm half Puerto Rican. My kids are in a school where they’re learning Spanish. And at some point I realized, “Cool story, Alex… you probably should learn it too.”

I tried a few different ways, but the one that actually stuck was Pimsleur. And what surprised me is why it works.

It doesn’t let you sit back and feel smart. It makes you answer before you’re ready. It makes you say things out loud, in real time, with a little pressure. You don’t get to hide behind notes or flashcards or theory.

And that’s when it clicked.

This is how everything in life works.

You don’t get better in life by just reading more books. You get better by making decisions before you feel 100% confident. You don’t get fit by watching workouts. You get fit by showing up when you don’t feel like it.You don’t become a better leader by thinking about hard conversations. You become one by having them.

Progress doesn’t come from being prepared. It comes from participating.

Pimsleur works because it forces action before comfort. Life works the exact same way.

If you’re waiting until you feel ready, confident, or fully equipped, you’re already behind. Start speaking. Start moving. Start deciding.

Fluency, success, and confidence all come from the same place: doing the thing while you’re still a little uncomfortable.
