Pain is unavoidable in this life. That’s not pessimism. That’s just reality.
From the first century until now, people have suffered. Different eras, different problems, same truth. Loss. Illness. Betrayal. Aging. Watching people you love change or disappear. That’s part of the deal.
If you asked me what pain I’m carrying right now, real talk, it’s my mom dealing with early onset memory loss. I don’t need to explain that much for you to understand it. Being physically present with someone who is slowly forgetting you, especially when it’s your own mother, sucks balls. There’s no poetic way to dress that up. It’s brutal. And if I’m honest, I’d rather not think about it most days.
But here’s the thing.
There’s no point asking, “How do I make this pain go away?”
You can’t. Some pain in life is non-negotiable.
What you can ask is, “What is this pain producing in me?”
There is a real connection between suffering and growth. Between being broken down and coming back stronger. Between pain and seriousness. Between suffering and drive.
I didn’t fully see it until recently, but there’s an edge to me now that wasn’t there last year. I give fewer fucks about bullshit. I’m clearer. I’m more focused. I’m less tolerant of wasting time. And I don’t think that’s an accident.
Some of that pain is being transmuted into something useful.
Does it still suck? Absolutely.
Would I choose it? No.
Can I avoid it? Also no, but I will try.
But I can take hold of what it’s producing.
Pain will either hollow you out or sharpen you.
You don’t always get to choose the pain.
You do get to choose what you do with it.
