Confidence Is Not the Absence of Fear

People talk about confidence all the time, but most of what passes for confidence is just bravado.

You see it online nonstop. Backward hats. Sleeveless shirts. Chest puffed out. Alpha-male reels. Loud music. A lot of performance. That’s not confidence. That’s noise.

Over the last few years, I’ve learned what confidence actually is.

Confidence is moving forward and doing what you know is right, even when you’re scared shitless.

Without getting into details, Eli Lilly is suing my company. Before anyone jumps to conclusions, they sue a lot of people. They’re the big dog, and they can. The difference is we’re at a place now where we can fight back. And we are. And we’re winning.

Now, does that phase me as much as it would have five years ago? No. But was I scared at first? Of course I was. Every now and then, does it still make me a little nervous? Yeah. It’s Eli fucking Lilly.
That’s the point.

Confidence isn’t the absence of fear. It’s acting anyway. It’s choosing the right path even when it creates conflict. Even when it costs money. Even when it would be easier to fold.

Real confidence comes from clarity. Knowing what you stand for. Knowing what’s right. And then moving forward despite the fear.

So if you’re trying to build confidence, stop performing it online. Stop flexing. Stop trying to convince people.

Figure out what you stand for.
Choose the harder right over the easier wrong.

And then take the step even when your stomach is tight.

That’s confidence.
